Get to Know Dr. John Wise, Your Frisco Texas Orthodontist
Dr. Wise combines an outstanding orthodontic education with a drive for excellence and new understanding. He's always looking for the best new technologies; for example, Wise Orthodontics and Stonebridge Orthodontics was one of the first in Collin County to offer Invisalign®. Dr. Wise received his DDS from the Baylor College of Dentistry and completed his Orthodontic Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, is a certified Invisalign provider, and is a guest lecturer at Texas Women's University and Collin County Community College.
"I always ask myself, 'What would I want if I were a patient here?'"
Dr. Wise strives to provide thoughtful patient care, and the results show in his comfortable waiting room, cheerful treatment area, and patient-centered practice. His patients know that he will explain every phase of their treatment and make sure they're comfortable every step of the way.
"We always keep a personal touch. For example, all of our patients have their own 'personal orthodontic assistant' throughout their time with us. That's not only better for the patients, it's better for us - we get a lot of personal satisfaction out of building those relationships."
Dr. Wise has ties to North Texas beyond being Frisco's first orthodontist. He is a 4th-generation native Texan, married to his high-school sweetheart. Dr. Carol Wise is the Director of Molecular Genetics at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. They have two children, Ben and Madeline, who keep their parents busy with sports, music, and school activities.
Dr. Wise founded the Rite to Smile Golf Classic and is a former president of the University of Texas Orthodontic Alumni Association and the Frisco Chamber of Commerce and 4th District Dental Society.

Personal Care from Beginning to End: What to Expect on Your First Visit to Wise Orthodontics
Moments after you arrive in our office for your consultation appointment, our treatment coordinator will greet you, take you on a tour of our office and make you comfortable in our examination room. Once she has reviewed your paperwork with you, she will welcome in Dr. Wise or Dr. Jensen. Your orthodontist will thoroughly examine your teeth and explain your overall orthodontic treatment needs in order to ensure common goals, an exceptional outcome and eliminate all surprises. The more patients know about their teeth, the more comfortable they are with their treatment. After your examination is complete and your treatment is outlined for you, the treatment coordinator will answer any further questions you may have and discuss your financial arrangements. If it is determined that you are ready for care, you can begin that day. You then meet your “Personal Smile Trainer” who works hand-in-hand with Dr. Wise and Dr. Jensen at each appointment to keep your orthodontic care comfortable, fun and efficient from beginning to end. Your team is now complete- a highly trained orthodontic specialist, your treatment coordinator, and your “Personal Smile Trainer”.

Toothbrush Trivia
The first time in history that people actively cleaned their teeth was between 4000 and 3000 BC in ancient Babylon (the site where Iraq is now). The Babylonians used “chew sticks” – thin twigs or tree roots that were chewed at the end to loosen the fibers and then used like brushes.
Between 2000 and 1000 BC the ancient Chinese used similar twigs to clean their teeth. But the Chinese took it one step further and used twigs from trees with a nice smell. (Perhaps this was an early attempt at breath freshening?)
The next time you brush your teeth, take a moment to be thankful that you have a nice, clean toothbrush with soft bristles – instead of a stick!

The Wise Orthodontics & Stonebridge Orthodontics Difference: Your Personal Orthodontic Assistant
This beneficial bond is welcomed by patients, parents, and the assistants themselves, who find that it supports quality care and ensures a positive experience. “Orthodontic treatment is probably the longest sustained personal interaction a person has with a medical professional,” notes Dr. Wise. “Patients typically visit their orthodontist 20 or 30 times over the entire course of treatment. We’ve expanded the team to include both the doctor and the personal orthodontic assistant, and have specifically designed the practice and the office around this concept.”
Mary Jo, a personal orthodontic assistant at Wise Orthodontics, has been in the field of dentistry for nearly 30 years. She notes, “This concept has enhanced treatment exponentially, in both direct and indirect ways. We get to know each patient personally, and become familiar with their needs and preferences. If they are especially sensitive or anxious, we know that before they arrive, and we can take great care of them during their appointment. We also get to know the parents and their scheduling needs. We can keep treatment from interfering with work or school.”
Robyn, another personal orthodontic assistant, points out, “I love this concept, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. It makes our days fun and it helps us provide exceptional care. Fortunately, our patients haven’t experienced any other kind of care, but the parents often exclaim that it’s sure not like the orthodontic treatment they remember!” She adds, “We enjoy visiting with our patients and we build a rapport with them. I enjoy keeping up with their trips, their games, their school events, their friendships — they consider us part of their lives. I often get cards from patients, and I’m flattered to have been invited to important occasions and celebrations.”
Lauren is a personal orthodontic assistant at the Stonebridge office. As she explains, “The one-on-one relationship we have with our patients helps them feel comfortable each time they visit, and really enhances continuity of care. I can monitor the improvement from month to month, watch for any concerns, and make recommendations if necessary. It’s exciting to see the transformation in their smiles during their time with us.”
According to Tammy, also at the Stonebridge office, “Every patient is different. Being a personal orthodontic assistant allows me to be familiar with every nuance of the patient’s treatment plan. We get to know what’s going on in their lives, what their interests are, and what is important to them. We form a strong bond with them. We are invested in their success just like they are, and they know we are on their side. It’s very rewarding to see them reach their goals.” She adds, “Our patients can provide electronic feedback through our Ortho Sesame program, and they are very complimentary. When I hear that they enjoyed their experience with me, it absolutely makes my day and keeps me charged up about my work.”

SureSmile Is a Sure Thing!
At our practice we will be treating almost every comprehensive orthodontic case with SureSmile, not to mention the ten SureSmile cases already in progress. Along with SureSmile technology we also use the new 3D Cone Beam CT scanner. This allows us to see 3D images of the patient’s jaw and mouth in order to more accurately monitor the progress of treatment as it is happening. We are able to catch and correct issues sooner and able to move the patient’s teeth to the idea position without making the treatment time any longer.
Patients and referring doctors love SureSmile, as it offers faster treatment times, more precise movement and placement of the teeth, and fewer office visits. To find out more about SureSmile please contact our practice to schedule an appointment with Dr. Wise.

Baby Teeth – and Gums – Need Special Care!
You should begin regular cleanings even before your baby has teeth. After each breast feeding – or bottle-feeding – use a clean, damp washcloth to gently rub your baby’s gum tissue. You can wrap the material around one finger to make it easier to remove any food bits from your baby’s mouth.
When your baby’s first tooth comes in switch to a baby toothbrush. Look for special baby toothbrushes in your drugstore – they have just a few bristles and are very soft. There are even brushes shaped like finger puppets that fit over the tip of your pointer finger! All you need at this point is water – no toothpaste yet.
After a few more teeth appear, you can start using toothpaste, but you only need a tiny bit, and make sure it doesn’t contain fluoride for the first three years. From the beginning, have your little one practice spitting the toothpaste out after brushing. That way, he or she will already have the good habit of spitting when you switch to fluoride toothpaste, which should never be swallowed.
If you have any questions about caring for your baby’s teeth, please contact Dr. Wise at 214-705-2602 in Frisco or 972-439-1391 in McKinney.

Ghosts, Goblins, and National Orthodontic Health Month!
BOO! Spooky recipes for a “braces friendly” Halloween
Frightfully Fabulous Cupcake Sandwiches
Ingredients:
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 cup warm water
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup superfine sugar
2 cups cake flour, sifted
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 can of chocolate frosting or store-bought chocolate mousse
1 container of whipped topping
Assorted “braces-friendly” candy pieces such as chopped peanut butter cups, chocolate bars and melt-in-your-mouth candies.
Halloween Safety Tips
* Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
* Carry a flashlight
* Wear a light-colored or reflective costume
* Choose face paint over masks for young ghosts and goblins
* Have an adult inspect all treats before the children dig in
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Fill a muffin tin with 12 cupcake liners and set aside.
Combine cocoa powder, water, and mix until smooth. Fold in mayonnaise. (Make sure cocoa mixture is not to hot to prevent breaking of mayonnaise). Add vanilla and whisk until smooth.
In mixer, combine sugar, cake flour, baking soda and salt and mix slowly until well incorporated. Add wet cocoa mixture, mix on medium-high until well blended. Scrape down the sides and blend for 30 seconds.
Fill the cupcake liners 3/4 way full of batter. Bake for 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool on rack.
Slice each cupcake in half, horizontally, and serve the halves with chocolate mousse or frosting, whipped topping, and assorted candy pieces. Kids build the sandwiches by spreading one-half of a cupcake with mousse/frosting or whipped topping, sprinkling on candy pieces and placing the other half of cupcake on top.
Makes 12 sandwiches.

What’s so Special About an Orthodontist Anyway?
Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontics (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontics (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontics (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).
Isn’t it nice to know there’s a dental expert to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

Clear Braces!
INVISALIGN
Dr. Wise is an Certified Invisalign Provider.
Consider Invisalign to get the beautiful straight teeth you've always wanted - without braces. A complimentary consultation with Dr. Wise can determine if Invisalign is right for you.
What is it?
Invisalign uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing. So you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology, and has been proven effective. More than 70% of orthodontists in the US and Canada are certified to treat with Invisalign.
Why would I want it?
Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your doctor's office getting adjustments. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start, so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.
How does it work?
You wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week - until they have straightened to the final position Your doctor has prescribed. You'll visit Dr. Wise about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

Orthodontic Treatment needed?
As our young children develop into kids, many things are happening with their smiles. The most obvious is the eruption of permanent teeth and the normal growth that is occurring.
Many times, the first few teeth are crowded out and can't come in properly. Or perhaps an overbite is developing. This is the time when orthodontics really becomes an art. Will the teeth have room? Do we need to expand the mouth? Will normal growth and development allow the teeth to come in straight with time? While many times the answers to these questions are obvious, sometimes a conservative approach, when the orthodontist becomes an observer, is the best solution.
We typically have a large window of opportunity during which we can begin treatment and still get the maximum benefit of modern orthodontics. Beginning the process too early can unnecessarily lengthen your child's treatment and make the orthodontic experience unpleasant and overly expensive. Should "early treatment" be required (expanders, functional appliances, partial braces, etc.) we are well equipped to proceed with a customized treatment plan for the child. Rest assured that at Wise Orthodontics and Stonebridge Orthodontics we will keep your child's best interests at heart.

Everybody Benefits from Braces!
Braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers anymore! Anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic care; whether it is correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.
To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident, taking action early can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.
If you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, don’t worry! You’re never too old for a beautiful smile. Set up an appointment for a consultation and find out how adult orthodontics will transform your smile, and your life!

When Are Two Phases of Treatment Necessary?
When we have patients with clear developmental problems at an early age, it’s best to start work when they are young, before the problems get bigger and more difficult to treat.
Examples include:
· An upper or lower jaw that is not growing correctly
· A mouth growing in a way that doesn’t leave enough room for all the permanent teeth to come in
· A severe malocclusion, or bad bite, which means the jaw doesn’t fit together correctly
In these cases we will start early and do one round of treatment – phase one – while the patient still has their baby teeth. Phase one usually does not involve braces, but can include a different type of appliance that helps the jaw grow into place properly. We’ll follow up with phase two usually a few years later, when permanent teeth are in place. Generally phase two involves standard braces.
In order to catch early problems, we recommend that children have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven (and so does the American Association of Orthodontics). However, if your dentist or pediatrician sees any sign that early treatment might be necessary, he or she may recommend your child visit our office even sooner.

Ortho Tips
A careful orthodontic patient can eat almost any food and do no damage to their appliance. However, these three types of foods may cause trouble:
Hard Foods may do damage by bending the wires, loosening the cement under the bands, or breaking the little brackets and tubes that are attached to the teeth.
Sticky Foods damage appliances by bending wires and pulling the cement seal loose.
Foods High in Sugar Content should be avoided between meals. Brush your teeth thoroughly immediately after eating sweets. You should be brushing your teeth at least three times a day.
Carbonated Beverages and Sports Drinks like Gatorade, especially sugared sodas are an absolute No-No. You will get white spots if you drink sugared colas (Coke, Dr. Pepper, 7-Up, etc.).

We support our community
CHARITY We've been part of Collin County since 1992 and are grateful for what this community has given us and even more proud to return the favor. Since charity is so important to us, we also like to give our patients an opportunity to help those less fortunate. For first time "offenders" who lose or break retainers, expanders, and other appliances, we will make a charitable contribution to the charity of your choice for HALF of the normal replacement cost. Normal replacement costs range from $75.00 to $200.00 or more depending on the type of appliance. You can also help make a difference just by paying your orthodontic bill through our Community Rewards Program. This program allows you to donate a portion of your bill to the charity of your choice. To find out more about this program, just give us a call. Here are some of the charities we support. FRISCO FAMILY SERVICES - www.friscocenter.org Collects and distributes goods and services to individuals and families in need. Note from School Nurse:
Thank you for the birthday card! Also, I especially want to thank you for the flowers you sent. I was asked to come to the school office and was surprised to find a very lovely flower arrangement with my name on it. The flowers are beautiful! I am more than happy to let friends, neighbors, and parents know how wonderful all of you are. Professionally, you all did an outstanding job at the 4th and 5th grade presentations at school. Personally, I couldn't ask for a better team to take care of my boys for their orthodontic care.
Thank you!!
